Open Office is like Microsoft Office but it is free. It will read and be able to open Microsoft Office files and you can also save them as them too. Java is used to run and view a lot of imaging on the Internet today. So if you don't have it you will not be able to see everything like you are supposed to. Thunderbird is a like Microsoft Outlooks They have a lot of items in it to help with getting the e-mails you want and getting rid of the ones you don't.
Fire Fox is like Internet Explorer you can have multiple sites open on a single page apposed to taking up tabs on your desktop. There are also a lot of add-ons to make it work best for you. I have times it loading compared to Internet Explorer and it is faster then it. I would say a lot faster
Sunbird is a calendar program that lets you manage your schedule and store it where you want.
Lightning brings the Sunbird calendar to Thunderbird e-mail program. So it will let you manage your schedule and store it where you want even more so.

Trillian Is a Messenger program that combines all the other major messengers in to one easy stop. You can log to it and still keep your individual identity from each service with out having to log into each one of them.
Portable Apps Isn't a program like the rest of thes but a site that has muliple programs that you can install on a memory stick and take with you and use on computers that don't have the programs installed on them.
